When I first heard the rumor that Utah Senator Orrin Hatch (R) might be in line for Attorney General, my reaction was probably much like yours (if you know anything about him). I was most definitely against the idea of such a blithering idiot becoming Attorney General.
I've come to have a change of heart though. Orrin Hatch is the best possible candidate for the position. I hope that you will all support his nomination, especially if you live in Utah.
No, that isn't a snark. I really do want him to take the AG job, and I really hope that he gets it.
The Salt Lake City Weekly changed my mind with this:
For those who fear that the disembodied head of Orrin Hatch suspended in a jar will be serving in the U.S. Senate well into the next century, there is good news: Hatch could be up for Attorney General. Utah’s senior senator denies it, but a fellow senator claims Hatch is openly campaigning for the job vacancy after the inevitable departure of embattled AG Alberto Gonzales. Here are the possible scenarios: First, Hatch—who has become Nixon-like in his attempts to shield President George W. Bush from investigation—as AG becomes embroiled in a White House-Congress impeachment fight and goes down with the ship. Another possibility is that Hatch survives, but a Democrat wins the White House. Either way, there would be a glimmer of a sunset on Hatch’s distinguished service.
A lightbulb went off over my head, and I realized that Utah could finally be rid of him, clearing the way for Pete Ashdown. This would be a blessing for Utah in so many ways, I can't even count. On the national stage, this would put someone who understands technology in the Senate, making laws around technology more reasonable.
I campaigned for Pete last year, and I look forward to the day I can do it again!
